Sphynx
Rules and Description

Sphynx

The Sphynx is not a truly hairless cat, but should be the texture of suede and warm to the touch. It is medium to medium large in size with the female being smaller than the male.

HEAD

Medium in size. A modified wedge with rounded contours. Slightly longer than wide with prominent, rounded cheekbones that form a curve above the distinctive whisker break. Strong rounded muzzle with prominent whisker pads. The skull is slightly rounded with a flat plane in front of the ears. In profile, the nose is straight and shows a very slight to moderate dip at the bridge of the nose. Strongly developed chin forms a perpendicular line with upper lip; firm chin.

EARS

Large to very large, wide at base, tapering to a rounded tip, without inner furnishings.  Set wide apart and carried upright; neither low set nor on top of the head.  The ears are set at a slight angle on the head, but are not flaring.  Some hair allowed on lower outside edges and on the back of the ears.

EYES

Wide set, large, full oval-shaped and slanting slightly upwards towards the outer edges of the ears.  They are set wide apart, with slightly more than an eye width between the eyes.

NECK

The neck is medium in length, rounded and well muscled, with a slight arch from the shoulders to the base of the skull.  Allowance to be made for heavy musculature in adult males.

BODY

Body of medium-to-medium long length, very sturdy and rounded; thick through the abdomen, giving the appearance of having eaten a large meal, but not fat.  Body hard and muscular with a broad chest.  Back line is slightly arched.  Boning is medium.

LEGS

Legs are medium in proportion to the body and are sturdy and well muscled.  Hind legs are slightly longer than front legs, with strong, well-developed hindquarters.

PAWS

Paws medium in size and oval with long toes.  The paw pads are thick, giving the appearance of walking on cushions.

TAIL

Long, fine and tapering.  Slender, flexible and in proportion to the body length

COAT

The skin should have the texture of suede and may be covered with very short, fine down.  Short, fine, soft, tightly packed hair is allowed on the ears, muzzle, tail, feet and testes.  A greater degree of hairlessness is preferred.  A tuft of hair on the tail tip is acceptable.  The skin is wrinkled in appearance.  The skin is very wrinkled in kittens.  Adults should retain as many wrinkles as possible, especially on the head, although wrinkling should not be so pronounced that it affects the cat’s normal functions.  Wrinkles should be prominent around the muzzle, between the ears and around the shoulders.  There are usually no whiskers, but if whiskers are present, they are short and sparse.
